성령의 열매

1. 말씀 기도(다같이): “투기와 술 취함과 방탕함과 또 그와 같은 것들이라 전에 너희에게 경계한 것 같이 경계하노니 이런 일을 하는 자들은 하나님의 나라를 유업으로 받지 못할 것이요(21절)” 하나님, 세상은 성적 타락과 영적 타락으로 어두워져 가고 있습니다. 사람들과의 관계는 서로 깨어지며 온갖 쾌락을 추구하는 세상이 되었습니다. 하나님의 백성으로 이런 세상에서 살면서 온갖 시험과 유혹이 우리를 넘어뜨리려고 하고 있습니다. 육체의 탐욕을 따라 세상에 빠져 사는 사람들은 천국에 들어갈 수 없다고 말씀하셨습니다. 예수님, 십자가의 능력으로 우리를 붙잡아주시어서 바른길 가게 하여 주시옵소서. 성령님, 우리 심령 안에 내재하셔서 성령의 열매를 맺으며 살아가는 하나님의 자녀가 되게 하시옵소서. 예수님의 이름으로 기도드리옵나이다. 아멘.
1. Word Prayer (All): “and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.” (verse 21). Got the Father, this world is darkening with spiritual depravity and the relationships with people have been broken. The world has become a world that pursues all kinds of pleasure. While we are living in this world as God's people, all kinds of trials and temptations are trying to overthrow us. You said that those who live in the world according to the greed of the flesh cannot enter the kingdom of heaven. Jesus, hold us by the power of the cross and lead us to the right path. Holy Spirit, please dwell in our hearts so that we may become children of God who live and bear the fruit of the Holy Spirit. We pray in the name of Jesus. amen.

4. Reading the scripture: Galatians 5:16-26
16 So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever[c] you want. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. 19 The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God. 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.
5. 본문 이해:
교회 창립 40주년을 맞이하면서 그동안 함께 하셔서 지금까지 인도해주신 하나님께 감사 찬양을 드립니다. 적지 않은 세월 40년을 광야 같은 알버커키에서 지내 온 것은 마치 출애굽 이스라엘이 광야 40년에 비교할 수 있습니다. 이스라엘 백성의 40년의 광야 생활은 온갖 유혹과 시험을 통한 단련의 시간이었습니다.
알버커키 연합감리교회도 지난 40년은 많은 시련을 통해서 단련하는 시간이었습니다. 40년 전 1982년 9월 12일 25명의 교우들이 가정집에서 모여서 드린 예배가 우리교회의 시작이었지요. 예배처가 마땅치 않아서 가정에서 교회를 시작했던 것입니다. 이후에 교회 건물에 세를 들어 예배를 드리기 시작했지만 그 또한 쉽지는 않았지요. 물론 한국 음식도 마음껏 먹지 못하고 예배 시간도 여러 제약이 뒤따랐습니다. 문제가 생기면 쫓겨나서 다른 교회로 예배 처소를 얻어서 이사 가야 했습니다. 이후 건축할 땅을 기증받았지만 땅위에 교회를 세우는 일 또한 만만치 않았습니다. 힘들었던 일들 불가능했던 일들이 많았지만 지나고 보니 해결되고 극복되어 오늘에 이른 것입니다. 돌이켜보면 수많은 시험과 역경이 있었지만 광야의 이스라엘 백성과 함께 하셨던 하나님이 우리 알버커키 연합감리교회와 함께 하셨습니다.
우리의 신앙 여정에도 처음에는 훈련의 단계가 있고 나중에는 열매의 단계가 있습니다. 훈련의 단계에서는 여러 가지 시험과 유혹과 역경을 만나게 됩니다. 그 원인은 “육체의 욕심(16절)”을 따르기 때문입니다. 육체의 욕심 때문에 일어나는 문제들은 “우상 숭배와 주술과 원수 맺는 것과 분쟁과 시기와 분냄과 당 짓는 것과 분열함과 이단과 투기와 술 취함과 방탕함과 또 그와 같은 것들이라(20, 21절).” 출애굽의 이스라엘 백성들도 광야에서 이런 문제들을 만났습니다. 이런 시험과 유혹을 극복한 사람들은 약속의 땅에 들어갈 수 있었지만 오히려 시험과 유혹에 빠진 사람들은 광야에서 방황하다 죽었지요. 우리 교회도 지난 40년 동안 많은 시험과 유혹이 있었지만 잘 이겨왔기에 오늘이 있게 된 것이지요.
창립 40주년을 맞이하면서 우리에게 기대하시는 하나님의 뜻은 곧 성령의 열매입니다. 곡식이 세월이 지나면 익어가고 열매를 맺는 것처럼 40년이란 적지 않은 세월을 보냈으면 우리도 그만큼 다듬어지고 성숙해져서 성령의 열매를 맺어야 합니다.
성령의 열매는 “사랑과 희락과 화평과 오래 참음과 자비와 양선과 충성과 온유와 절제(22, 23절)”라고 합니다. 지금부터 우리교회는 미움이라고는 찾아볼 수 없는 사랑이 풍성한 교회, 예배드릴 때마다 희락 곧 기쁨이 충만한 교회, 서로 싸우거나 시기하는 일이 전혀 없는 평화로운 교회가 되기를 소망합니다. 지금부터 우리교회는 화가 나는 일이 있거나 부딪히는 일이 있더라도 오래 참는 교회, 처음 보거나 오랜만에 만나는 교인들을 보면 한없이 친절한 자비로운 교회, 어렵고 힘든 상황에 처한 이웃을 보면 선을 베푸는 교회가 되기를 소망합니다. 지금부터 우리교회는 하나님이 원하시는 일이라면 기쁘게 받아들여 죽도록 충성하는 교회, 성격이 부드럽고 마음이 따뜻한 교인들이 많은 교회, 신앙의 성장을 위하여 자신을 절제하며 잘 관리하는 교회가 되기를 소망합니다.
5. Understanding the Text:
As we celebrate the 40th anniversary of the founding of the church, we give thanks and praise to God for being with us and guiding us so far. The fact that we have spent 40 years in Albuquerque like the wilderness can be compared to the 40 years of the Exodus of Israel in the wilderness. The 40 years of the Israelites' life in the wilderness was a time of training through all kinds of temptations and trials.
The last 40 years of Albuquerque United Methodist Church have been a time of training through many trials. 40 years ago, on September 12, 1982, 25 church members gathered in a home for a service that was the beginning of our church. They started the church at home because they did not have worship place like church. After that, They rented a church building and had worship service there, but that was not easy either. Of course, They couldn't eat Korean food to their heart's content, and there were many restrictions about the time of worship. If there was a trouble from us, we had to get kicked out and move to another church to get a place of worship. After that, the land to be built was donated, but building a church on the land was not easy. There were a lot of difficult things and impossible things, but after a while, all of them were solved and overcame to reach where we are today. Looking back, there were many trials and tribulations, but the God who was with the Israelites in the wilderness was with us Korean United Methodist Church in Albuquerque.
In our journey of faith, first there is a stage of training and then there is a stage of fruit. During the training phase, we will be faced with many trials, temptations, and adversity. The reason is that we follow “the desires of the flesh” (verse 16). The problems caused by the desires of the flesh are “idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like”(verses 20, 21). The Israelites in the Exodus also encountered these problems in the wilderness. Those who overcame these trials and temptations could enter the Promised Land, but those who fell into temptation and temptations wandered in the wilderness and died. Our church has faced many trials and temptations over the past 40 years, but it is what we are today because we have overcome them well.
As we celebrate our 40th anniversary, God's will for us is the fruit of the Holy Spirit. Just as grains ripen and bear fruit with the passage of time, after 40 years have passed, we too must be matured to that extent and bear the fruit of the Holy Spirit.
The fruit of the Spirit is “love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control"(verses 22, 23). From now on, we hope that our church will be a church full of love that cannot be found in hate, a church full of joy at every worship service, and a peaceful church where there is no fighting or envying each other. From now on, we hope that our church will be a church that endures for a long time no matter how angry or bumped it is, a church that is infinitely kind and compassionate whomever we meet, and a church that does good for the neighbors in difficult and difficult situations. From now on, we hope that our church will become a church faithful for God's will, a church that has many members with soft and warm hearts, and a church having members controling and managing himself or herself well for the growth of faith.

God, please open our eyes so that we can see clearly whether there are sexual or spiritual depravity in our lives, discord in relationships, and the pursuit of pleasure. Just as Jesus, who bore the sins of mankind, died on the cross, help us to crucify all the things that are caused by the desires of our flesh. God, open our ears so that we can clearly hear the voice of the Holy Spirit in our hearts. In obedience to the voice of the Holy Spirit, shut off all that is happening because of the sinful nature of the flesh. In our following the guidance of the Holy Spirit like a farmer, help us to live a life like a tree that grows healthy and beautiful and bears abundant fruit.
